Big Glow is a new lighting piece by Australian design duo Studio Truly Truly, created in collaboration with Rakumba. It’s a large-scale pendant that explores the emotional and material qualities of light, how it feels, how it’s remembered, and how it’s shaped by place.
Living in the Netherlands for over a decade, designers Kate and Joel Booy became increasingly aware of how different light feels across geographies. Big Glow reflects that contrast: from the intensity of the Australian sun to the softer, more diffuse light of Northern Europe. It’s a warm and tactile response to that experience designed to offer comfort, atmosphere and a strong material presence.
A Refined Take on a Familiar Form
Big Glow reimagines the classic glowing sphere. Its generous, softly geometric form provides ambient light alongside a more directional glow, making it both functional and atmospheric.
While the shape feels familiar, the material is entirely new. The outer shell is crafted from nonwoven Australian wool blended with plant-based fibre. The result is a softly translucent surface that gently filters light, offering both visual warmth and acoustic benefits.
Natural Material, Thoughtfully Engineered
Developed in collaboration with Rakumba and supported by The Woolmark Company, the material responds well to heat and pressure, forming seamless, sculptural panels. The subtle glow comes directly from the natural fibres, no surface coatings, no tricks just an honest material treated with care.
Wool was chosen for its warmth, softness and sustainability. It's compostable, and Big Glow has been designed to ship efficiently, with components that can be easily disassembled to minimise waste and reduce transport impact.
A Collaboration Rooted in Place
Big Glow brings together two Australian names working from very different places. Rakumba is Australia’s longest-standing luxury lighting brand, with a background in fabric-based lighting. Studio Truly Truly operates from the Netherlands, known for their refined approach to form and material.
The connection to wool is personal, too. Rakumba’s Managing Director Michael Murray grew up on a sheep farm in Victoria’s Western District the same landscape captured in the Big Glow campaign imagery. The piece speaks to heritage but looks forward.
