Australian Embassy

Washington D.C

Architect: Bates Smart

Photographer: Joe Fletcher

Kett furniture takes centre stage at the Australian Embassy in Washington DC, thanks to Bates Smart's visionary redesign. Their approach weaves an unmistakable Australian narrative throughout the project, with Kett supplying exceptional locally-made furniture. Inspired by our country's landscape, these pieces enrich the Embassy's interior, now proudly adorned with Kett's creations in the foyer.

Showcasing the talent of First Nations artists alongside leading Australian furniture designers.

The Embassy's bold architectural statement blends seamlessly with Washington's landscape, celebrating Australia's natural beauty and cultural heritage. A spacious atrium serves as the heart of the building, connecting ground and sky, flooded with natural light to create a serene work environment.

Inside, leading Australian designers' pieces sit alongside historical designs, such as reinterpreted classics like Robin Boyd's Walsh St Sofa. The space comes alive with vibrant rugs, paintings, and sculptures, showcasing the talent of First Nations artists.

The Johanna Sofa’s evolution and its innovative side table integration.

In the foyer, guests are welcomed by Kett's Johanna Sofas and Occasional Chairs, custom-made to evoke Victoria's rugged Johanna region. These pieces, with dark oak bases and forest green wool upholstery, blend seamlessly with the Embassy's colour palette.

Mark Healey’s original layout for the Embassy’s waiting area featured the Johanna occasional chairs alongside the Otway Sofa and Otway Side Table. Justin recognised the firm’s preference for the Johanna chair and a minimal environment. He explains, “It was this discourse that inspired the evolution of the Johanna Sofa, culminating in the innovative integration of a side table which displayed the Ora Lamp by Ross Gardham.”

The appeal of the Johanna collection was enhanced by its use of eco-conscious materials and its ability to meet durability requirements.

The Embassy's commitment to environmental design aligns perfectly with Kett's sustainability ethos. The Johanna Collection, crafted with eco-conscious materials, enhances the project's appeal while meeting durability demands.

Kett's Otway Coffee and Side Tables also grace the Embassy's interior, featuring durable ceramic surfaces and hand-made timber bases. This collaboration not only marks a milestone for Kett but also underscores our dedication to excellence and showcasing Australian design globally.
