Little OG
Architect: Little Brick Studio
Photographer: Shannon McGrath
The stunning home designed by McMahon and Nerlich exemplifies their signature approach to architecture and interior design. Little OG is an innovative living experiment, transforming a small south-facing Victorian cottage within a tiny row house into a modern home. The design features a dissolving courtyard and ample natural light, allowing the home to expand and contract, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor elements. Furnished with Australian-inspired pieces from Kett, the home beautifully integrates functionality and aesthetics, bringing it into the 21st century.
Featuring light grey fabrics, beige leather, and natural timber stains, harmoniously integrate with the surroundings.
Natural light floods the room through expansive windows and a skylight, enhancing the beauty of the wooden materials used throughout the space. The warm atmosphere created by the wooden ceiling beams and floors is complemented by open shelving and minimalist cabinetry, which offer both functionality and aesthetic appeal. Kett's furniture pieces, featuring light grey fabrics, beige leather, and natural timber stains, harmoniously integrate with the surroundings.Â
Potted plants and greenery, both inside and out, enhance the connection to nature, contributing to a serene and tranquil environment.
The spatial plan retains front rooms, adds a central courtyard for light, and redistributes upper-level forms. It features a dissolving central courtyard with sliding doors, merging indoor and outdoor spaces. A floating staircase with sleek white railings adds a sculptural element to the design, leading to a second level that appears equally bathed in natural light. Potted plants and greenery, both inside and out, enhance the connection to nature, contributing to a serene and tranquil environment.
Local furniture, ceramicists, and artists are highlighted.
With sustainability as a key consideration, timber becomes the defining material, showcasing local craftsmanship. Local furniture, ceramicists, and artists are highlighted. The kitchen and open-tread staircase enhance spatial flow and light. Through planning and spatial generosity, rooms are compact yet combine to create a poetic outcome through materiality and light. The design converts a one-bedroom terrace into a home for a semi-retired client and her family.
